Bad N900, Bad !
The story….
Well, it all started with a small “no more memory” error telling me I cant do
anything, not enough space although my mass memory still had about 4GIG free and
the system memory was only about half full, about 400Mb’… I needed to delete
conversations. I started to do so, however after 5 conversation I deleted it
stop deleting, everything else worked fine, just stop deleting conversations. I rebooted the device, started deleting conversations again… and again, it stop responding to this operation after about 5 deletions. I restarted the device again and BOOM, its like I booted it for the 1st’ time, ALL my info was gone, contacts, calendar, setting,
bookmarks and clean desktops!, all gone!.
Well, whats left to do if not to reinstall the OS (was good time to do it actually after all the games I did with it). I tried, using Nokia software update and nothing, my Windows7 machine did not recognize the USB connection with the device all of the sudden. I read in the forums that it might be a battery issue and that’s why I can’t bring my N900 to “R&D” mode (holding “u” key while connecting the UBS) after several rebooting, the battery is getting drained. I took a full battery from a friend who has the XM5800 and now was able to run the device in R&D mode, however, Windows still did not recognized
the device. I downloaded the “flasher” and tried with it and same result,
nothing. I went to a friend who has Fedora10 Linux installed and installed the
Flasher and it worked well, Fedora recognized the UBS and reinstalled Maemo on
the device, it now works, however… since I did not formatted the mass storage
it looks like some applications had some sort of a log or system files in the mass storage can not be reinstalled!.
Nokia!?!, where is the “format mass storage” on the N900 ??, why do I need to
run the flasher again, I don’t and would not, I want a simple tool like all other
nSeries when entering to the file browser or memory details to format the mass storage according to the device needs (folder structure etc’) .
Where is my all time favorite, in case I want to bring the device back to
its FULLY original state just press on the num-pad *#7370# for soft reboot?!? and how come *#0000# code works but the *#7370# doesnt?.
I love this N900 just don’t get why some of the basic operations that are available at all the other nSeries are missing from the N900, i know i know its a bit different by being a Maemo and Symbian but why the hustle for a simple formatting and soft reset… Who knows…
P.S:
Sorry about my grammer
With the new update, Skype credit !
The big update for N900
The great N900 got a big update, v. 2.2009.51.1
I had a problem updating it over the air, I got the error saying “Not enough memory in target location” although I had plenty of space in both the mass storage and the application memory, so I had to use Nokia Software Update through the PC.
Through the PC the update went fast and smooth, you can find the full change log here.
There is an update for the N900…
Just saw this morning, there is a new firmware update (v.1.2009.44-1.002) for the amazing N900.
I’ll check it at home after work today and will write of any new features or bug fixes that I’ll see, or just link to a change log out there
.
Update:
The update went smoothly:
Looks like one of the only changes is the new look for the app manager:
There was also a big update for the game Bounce..
And the Ovi store is now online too:
One way to delete the mp3 cover image files on the N900
Hi all.
As I mentioned before, the n900 has a very annoying thing, when you drag & drop mp3 folders to your .sounds folder, it takes all the images there(which are usually the album cover art) locks them down and puts them in the image library.
Here is one way to delete those files on a windows machine:
Connect your N900 via cable in “Mass storage mode”, check what is the n900’s directory path, in my case H:
Open a python shell and type(again, depends on where you put those mp3 folders, in my case in the “.sounds” folder):
##———————————–##
import os, glob
##–This will delete all the jpgs under .sounds/mp3(in my case)
for i in glob.glob(’H://.sounds//*//*.jpg’):
=> os.chmod(i, 666)
=> os.unlink(i)
##–This will delete all the jpgs under .sounds/mp3/anotherFolderDown(in my case)
for i in glob.glob(’H://.sounds//*//*//*.jpg’):
=> os.chmod(i, 666)
=> os.unlink(i)
##–This will delete all the jpgs under .sounds/mp3/anotherFolderDown/anotherFolderDown(in my case)
for i in glob.glob(’H://.sounds//*//*//*//*.jpg’):
=> os.chmod(i, 666)
=> os.unlink(i)
##———————————–##
=> (means Tab or 4 spaces)
There are MANY other ways to set it, this is just one
.
The best thing to do it a loop that goes through the folders and if it finds a jpg file just chmod it and unlink it.
This is just the most transparent way to do it
.
And… of course, you can do the same directly from within the device, since it Python build into it already
Hope it helps, later…
The bad, good and ugly.. of the N900
Hi all here are some of my thoughts about the N900 after 6 weeks usage.
N900 firmware version: 1.2009.42-11.002.
The Bad:
- Just don’t get it, it was missing in all S60 devices as well, NO timer/stopwatch !! again….
Yes, I know I can download many many apps to do that, but why should I for such a basic operation.
- I do not know if its a hardware issue or software but the old nSeries remote that comes with some devices does not work with this nSeries device
.
- After drugging and dropping my music into the device, some of the album art images added to my image library, I think the device should have some sort of filtering for images that are in music albums, there is NO reason what so ever that I’ll see the album art in the images library.
- When listening to music, as a boom box, just from the speakers and than lowering the volume, the whole system sounds volume goes down as well, Nokia, you never done this before, why the system sounds is connected to the music player volume, they got nothing to do with each other, same thing happens when connecting earphones in.
- In the media player, there is no equalizer to make sure all the songs coming out at the same volume
.
The good:
- Started back with the E71(update: A friends just told me, it might have started with the N96, ThnX Rob), the breathing/notification light is awesome.
- The multitasking is super powerful, just keep it all open in the background, love it.
- Skype integration is amazing, what can I say, who sends text messages anymore???.
- I love that I can customize the desktop as anyways I want… its cool, put a contact there, widget there and a shortcut here… play around with it and vvvwaala.. your own device
- I like the full shell access, although I broke my device once already, but hey!, at least the option is there for real developers that know what they are doing and making new things for it by the day.
The Ugly:
- The place to put the holding strap in on the top of the device… just weird, usualy its on the botton, I guess its a “I’m use to it” isuue
- The microphone hole, to my opinion should be invisible, more like a dent in the plastic, or maybe it could have been one of the right(bottom) speaker holes.
- I do not like that the micro USB plug in not covered, could have been, should have been?, no?.
- I liked that it arrived in a very nice, compact small box.
-
Overall, this device is amazing, and I’m sure most of the things will be fixed soon with a frimware updates.
Don’t get me wrong, some of those things can drive a person crazy, however, since I still believe there are more good than bad I’m not going crazy just yet and loving my N900 a lot
Happy new year all :)
A cute Twitter app for the N900
Why I think the n900 is better than iPhone.
Many people ask me why I think the n900 is better,I decided to post this so I could just point them to here to read and
UNDERSTAND that it (n900) can do much more, yes, it IS better, if its for you or not… not me to judge.
I can understand why most of north Americans, who came from a “dumb Phone”, like the Motorola Razar V3 to an iPhone see it as the mother of all creation, just remember… before it had copy/paste/mms/video/bluetooth support headsets and much more, the iPhone users said “yeah.. but we never use it anyways”… of course they didn’t, cause they couldn’t.
After Apple came with the updates, all the iPhone users were amazed by what it could have done… old features that even their old dumb phone could have done and now they are using it all the time.
This situation WILL happen again, for example when Apple will introduce multitasking on the iPhone, I see it already, iPhones user will go “check it out, I can make Skype calls and keep Skype open in the background, its amazing, so new, so refreshing!”… too bad all Nokia’s and other manufactures smartphones from 4 years ago could have done that and still do.
1st’ read this!, I mean it, read it don’t close it cause of the title, there is a reason for it.
Anyone I asked who has an iPhone said its true or agreed to parts of it.
My boss actually, killed the 3g connection so he could make phone calls, just keep in mind.
Why I think the n900 is better.
* Full bluetooth support (connect PC and other devices).
* Physical keyboard.
* OPEN SOURCE Linux platform, I have shell in it, with python and FULL root access, can do whatever I want with it.
* Multitasking, I never close any application, no need to.
* Integrated SIP accounts, Skype and gTalk !!!(freaking amazing).
* 5MP camera with flash & auto focus.
* Drag & drop, (no need the iTunes).
* more sound and video support.
V: mp4, .avi, .wmv, .3gp; codecs: H.264, MPEG-4, Xvid, WMV.
A: wav, .mp3, .AAC, .eAAC, .wma, .m4a and already has an ogg support is out there that someone wrote.
* 4 home screen FULLY customize, with widgets, shortcuts, contacts and bookmarks
* The home screen widgets are “alive”, running application, not just sitting thumbnails.
* TV out, already used it, its sweet ![]()
* Front camera, if you like that feature.
* Full web surfing with FULL flash 9.4 and java scripts support. web pages look the same as desktop, and now you can have actually Firefox with add-ons on it, its sweet.
* Full HTML email support.
* FM transmitter(can listen to internet streaming radio in your car, for example).
* 800 × 480 pixel resolution
* Maps can be stored on device
So…. yes, I think its better than the iPhone.
By the way, the apple app store has about 100,000 apps, most are games and the ones that are not games, they just crap, out of all those apps, there are maybe 30 apps that are actually doing something productive, I think. no ?
Disagree ?
