What’s next for Nokia in my opinion. An open letter to Nokia
Hi all.
I hope someone inside Nokia will see it and decide that at least some of it is right and should be changed.
This letter is totally from a personal perspective, I just like Nokia and it is hard to see it getting pumped back in popularity over other manufactures because of things that I think could be an easy fix.
Nokia general:
Global website:
What do I mean by that, I think Nokia should make ONE website for phones and accessories.
The reason I’m saying this is cause right now the Nokia website is one big mess, for example, I can’t find N900 at the Canada website for sell, when I think of it, why not?!?, people want to buy and find info of phones no matter where they are, and of course, buy them, regardless to their location.
this website could also have a fast info on updates about the phones, firmware updates and full list of Nokia’s services as well, also an easy to access bug report, for example, I still have no idea where I can do that to any phone!.
Global Devices:
Just like the N8, Nokia should go from now on to global 3G radio frequencies in their devices.
Since you can say that space is not an issue anymore, I mean you can put up to 4/16/32GB on a device with no problem these days, I believe the OS Nokia use should have ALL languages in the device.
Having these two things together (languages and global 3G frequencies) will give Nokia a lot of rest and less work, each device will have only ONE variant, one update system and everyone can use it no matter where they are.
The “product code” is hell, each country with its own, each cellphone provider with its own… wow, getting an unlocked is also a different product code, each product code with its own updates and languages, its time to put that to rest.
Enough memory for the OS will give you plenty of room for languages and software updates (like the N900 1GB dedicated for OS/installation/updates, it can be more with no problem).
Branding, no more:
You want to know why people don’t like Nokia, here is the answer, branding!.
Let me explain, lets say Mr.Smith got N97mini from Rogers Canada. the firmware is at version 1 of the device.
Till Rogers will not “approve”, modify(!?!) and let people know that V2 is out there, Mr.Smith will never get the update(although its already out by Nokia), this update, by the way fixes a lot of bug and improve performance and just like me, I doubt Mr.Smith will go through the trouble of changing the product code, come to think of it, why would he.
Let me ask you this, why would Mr.Smith will get another Nokia?, I’ll answer, he will not, what he remembers is that hes N97mini has bugs and lagi.
I say NO more branding, lets say O2/Orange in the UK want the N8, Nokia should give all their devices “As is”.
I know that the providers want to put their own crap on the devices, but why not Android devices or iPhones ?, well cause there is a lot of demand for those phones, if Nokia will keep making amazing devices and create enough buzz around them, the demand will come, and fast. Than Nokia will be able to drop the branding.
Again, I still think Nokia should do it ASAP! that way, delivering updates will be easy, people love that, seeing that the manufacture care for its customers.
Always have a place for a wrist strap:
well, a place for a wrist trap is good, please keep it up and do not kill that option, ever, for any phone!.
Skype/facebook/twitter(maybe) integration into contacts:
Just like the N900, I think its awesome that new phones will have the same option of integrated social networks into the contacts, its sweet.
Things that annoy me personally:
What’s the story:
I still do not get it, all S40 devices have it, timer and stopwatch why is it always missing from new devices, this is very individual thing, not sure everyone would be on this with me but I just find this annoying, why I need to install a software for such a fundamental thing.
New UI:
Looks like the new Symbian^3/^4, by what was out by Nokia, at least, looks like Nokia likes to keep old legacy of Symbian ^1/^2. A brand new ui will not be a bad idea, something a bit more intuitive for new users.
I know Nokia is working on it, but we need to see it asap, thats all.
Clock on lock screen:
Like the E71, E75, N900 and many more, I love the fact that a press on one of the button when lock & keys are locked shows the clock, its a good feature, would love to see it more.
Give old remote, can use my own ear piece:
The new remote+ear piece that Nokia is giving it a step down, I think, Its a good ear piece but I can not change it with whatever ear piece that I want, Nokia use to give remote controls for N series with just the remote so people could use whatever ear piece they wanted, that was great, I think it should stay that way, the more customizable the device and accessories, the better.
That is it, for now, hope my grammar didn’t kill you.
All I wish is for Anssi Vanjoki to see this, hehe… ![]()
